The Dice Project

DICE Deployment

"It must be considered that there is nothing more difficult to carry out, nor more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to handle, than to initiate a new order of things."
Machiavelli

This page contains information about the deployment of DICE within the School of Informatics.

Overview

DICE is scheduled to be deployed starting in the Summer 2002. It is initially expected to take 3 years before all commodity machines are running it. It will be done in three main stages and therefore is expected to be fully deployed by 2004.

However, it is important to note that even when it is fully deployed the DICE project will not be finished. In principle it never will be as technology keeps changing and there always changes and new services and features that the School will require.

Equally important to note is that DICE is a large and comnplex system: designing and integrating improvements and additions requires careful planning and implementation..

Stages

The current plan is that DICE will in be deployed in 3 stages. The main reason for this is that for the BP, FH and SB sites it requires all existing commodity hardware (Suns) to be replaced with Intel-based hardware.

The current write-down period for machines is three years. The first stage provides the minimal set of functionality that we require to get a working DICE infrastructure. It includes interim solutions to some current problems. In subsequent stages these will be redone to implement them correctly/fully and additional features will be implemented as well.

Stage 1

This initial stage is significantly more than just deploying the new DICE technology. It involves a transition process for many users from their accounts on legacy systems to using new accounts in the @informatics domain.

It is the most substantial of the stages as so much has to be in place to get the infrastructure off the ground. However, there will be a lot of work for the subsequent stages as well. There will be a detailed list of the Stage 1 targets/requirements available soon.

Subsequent stages

It is inevitable there will be substantial review of how Stage 1 went before deciding the priorities for Stage 2. At this point no decisions have been made about what tasks will need to be done next, although the development team are already starting meetings to look ahead at what might be needed and when.

In terms of scheduling, given that the core infrastructure will be in place and the transition of users will have happened, changes and additional features can more easily phased in gradually. Replacement of equipment will probably be done in larger chunks though to avoid bulges in the replacement cycle.

Pilot service

There is now (as of 12/7/2002) a pilot DICE service available for testing by users. This consists of a central server for remote access, and a number of public workstations which users can sit in front of to get a feel for the standard DICE experience

If you want to try it out please talk to your local support team.

There is further information here:

Please use the Support web form to report your feedback, questions, and problems with DICE.

Schedule

The schedule for deployment is still being worked on as the nature and complexity of the tasks involved are assessed. (NB development tasks are completely separate to this.) A fuller timetable will be provided here shortly. In the meantime, the provisional schedule is below, but it will change.

Tasks

A large number of tasks related to rolling out DICE have been identified. More will evolve as time goes on. The tasks have been grouped into the different stages.

In order to provide a record of the issues faced and the decisions made and there are quite extensive reports into each area. These are often works-in-progress but, warts and all, are available for everyone to look at.

Each task has an individual file with short name and prefixed with '<N>_' where N is the stage.

Progress: Goals/Milestones/Actions

There is now a page containing goals, milestones and actions for all tasks.

DICE Meetings

There is a page listing the regular DICE-related meetings and associated minutes

There is a decisions summary page with all the decisions from the meetings.

There is also a list of ad-hoc meetings.

Absence/holiday dates

There is a page for DICE-related COs absences and holidays.
