The Dice Project

Task:Backups
Group:Bill
Stage:1

Description

A system for UNIX filesystem backups.

Report Changes

2002-04-23
It was expected that existing backup procedures/systems would suffice for Stage 1 as NFS servers were staying in the legacy domain. However, there are various servers under DICE that will need backing up such as mail and web servers. This task has consequently been moved into Stage 1.

Existing systems/procedures

KB
Existing DCS setup is to do full nightly backups to "rsync" disk mirrors, with weekly backups to tape. Users can access the "rsync" filesystems direct via /yesterday/{user}.
BP
Buccleuch Place runs daily incremental backups to tape with a monthly cycle for full backups. There is one system for UNIX and a separate one for Macintosh/Windows desktops and laptops.
FH/SB

Notes

We need a simple system initially for the web and mail servers. This is going to be done using amanda server software and local DAT drives.

Issues

It probably doesn't matter which domain tape servers or rsync servers are in.
