Minutes

  1. Corrections to minutes of 2002-06-25

  2. Pilot service

Various issues relating to the announcement of the pilot service were discussed.

    amd:
this has been stable since Friday and currently only seems to be affecting mounts from CogSci (rhymer.cogsci)
    LDAP:
this is more stable. It shouldn't be a problem for clients if it does go away. There are changes to be made so that the changelog is put into LDAP and replicated to slaves so that clients can update without causing high loads. LDAP will also be converted to using BBDB instead of dbm.
    sendmail:
appends dcs.ed.ac.uk by default to outgoing mail, unless overridden by mail agent. Users will be advised that they shouldn't initiate mail sending from inf machines at the moment.
    volunteers:
once we have a few users we want target a number of volunteers who will migrate to having a DICE machine on their desk who will get extra hand-holding.
    policy changes:
we need good publicity on policy changes, such as use of the web-form for support, to minimise possible complaints.
    support of s/w:
we need a suitable information easily accessible that will indicate what s/w is available. This will be auto-generated for those things that are installed. There will also be a manually maintained page giving status of typically Solaris packages indicating whether and when they will be ported.
    test cluster:
we are increasingly going to need a test cluster to allow safe testing of updates.
    .

Teaching Committee recently recommended a prioritisation policy for porting of teaching-related software in the following order:

    1. packages benefiting the greatest number of users
    2. easy to port packages
    3. Solaris to Linux

  3. Milestones

We need to review milestones and progress generally. The most effective way to do this is for Jeremy to talk to individuals and update the milestones page in conjunction with the latest information. This will start w/b 15 July

    [ACTION: Jeremy]

There is also a general concern that task reports and documentation may not be up-to-date. If tasks have modified their architectural approach since the reports were largely finalised it is important that these get updated. Actions will be noted as part of milestones gathering .

It would be very useful if tasks could give some indication of the dependencies that they are aware of in their task and any assumptions that are made relating to them. An example might be if a task depends on a list of trusted hosts and is expecting to get that from a particular source. The source may be correct at the moment but may change.

One approach to doing this would be to define what a task sees as the public interfaces to any information or service they provide.

We also need a more detailed plan for the rollout. Up to now it has largely been the responsibility of the site managers to decide when things will happen. This needs to be more closely coordinated to bring the user load on DICE up gradually.

    [ACTION: Jeremy]
  4. Backups

There was a lengthy discussion of backups, in particular relating to how data areas will get backed up.

The amanda component that Bill is writing will handle backups to local tape drives very simplistically, allowing resources to be specified for what parts of the filesystem need to be backed up. This will then provide a record of what data needs to be restored in the event of a full rebuild. Since amanda can handle any level of granularity from disk/partition, directory or individual file, this should cover all requirements.

We expect there to be local tape drives on both the mailhub and the homepages servers.

Rather than proliferate tape drives, the profile and LDAP master servers can be rsynced to the rsync mirrors (not into /yesterday) and then backed up using tape drives local to be mirrors. We need to check the current situation with backups of tomato, the current profile server.

    [ACTION: Iain]

There is a new rsync mirror machine and this may be installed in the inf rather than dcs domain.

  5. Matters arising from minutes of last meeting (2002-06-25)

    1. Actions Arising - Doc types: Deployment tasks need to notify Alison what types of documents they will be producing. [All deployment task 'owners'].
      Done

    2. Actions Arising - DICE deployment publicity: Site managers should make sure that this publicity is provided. [Alastair/Jeremy/Ken]
      Ongoing

Ken to be sent list of final changes to update DB.

    9. searchable cos@inf: tweaking the Harvester config. [Neil] (noted 2002-06-11)
