Various issues relating to the announcement of the pilot service were discussed.

Teaching Committee recently recommended a prioritisation policy for porting of teaching-related software in the following order:
We need to review milestones and progress generally. The most effective way to do this is for Jeremy to talk to individuals and update the milestones page in conjunction with the latest information. This will start w/b 15 July
There is also a general concern that task reports and documentation may not be up-to-date. If tasks have modified their architectural approach since the reports were largely finalised it is important that these get updated. Actions will be noted as part of milestones gathering .
It would be very useful if tasks could give some indication of the dependencies that they are aware of in their task and any assumptions that are made relating to them. An example might be if a task depends on a list of trusted hosts and is expecting to get that from a particular source. The source may be correct at the moment but may change.
One approach to doing this would be to define what a task sees as the public interfaces to any information or service they provide.
We also need a more detailed plan for the rollout. Up to now it has largely been the responsibility of the site managers to decide when things will happen. This needs to be more closely coordinated to bring the user load on DICE up gradually.
There was a lengthy discussion of backups, in particular relating to how data areas will get backed up.
The amanda component that Bill is writing will handle backups to local tape drives very simplistically, allowing resources to be specified for what parts of the filesystem need to be backed up. This will then provide a record of what data needs to be restored in the event of a full rebuild. Since amanda can handle any level of granularity from disk/partition, directory or individual file, this should cover all requirements.
We expect there to be local tape drives on both the mailhub and the homepages servers.
Rather than proliferate tape drives, the profile and LDAP master
servers can be rsynced to the rsync mirrors (not into
/yesterday) and then backed up using tape drives local to
be mirrors. We need to check the current situation with backups of
tomato, the current profile server.
There is a new rsync mirror machine and this may be installed in the
inf rather than dcs domain.
Ken to be sent list of final changes to update DB.
cos@inf: tweaking the Harvester
config. [Neil] (noted 2002-06-11)
This is higher priority as searching for past postings would be very useful. Still need to find a suitable technical way to do this.
There may be a need for an MSc or PhD group related to teaching but Ken will think about this.

Requested but no response yet.
Neil will respond to the member of staff.
There is now a web page describing the policy; this needs to be advertised to staff.
