- Pilot service progress
There have been very few people asking for accounts on the DICE pilot
service. This is essential to get more bugs ironed out. A number of
approaches will be tried to encourage more usage.
- re-advertising
- personal introduction
- targetting users who already have PCs
- identifying teaching staff who will definitely be using DICE for
for modules to be taught in October.
It would be useful to turn off the KDE screen blanking for the
public-access pilot machines to make them more visible. [ACTION: Iain]
- Mozilla
Despite concerns about some machines being old and not having enough
RAM, Mozilla will be the default/recommended browser under DICE.
- Printing
Despite causing some concerns over consistency of output with respect
to n-up and tumble/notumble it was agreed that the default would be to
have all printers, monochrome and colour, print duplex output.

There is a need for a general-purpose sysadmin server for things
such as cron. [ACTION: Alastair]
- COs using DICE:
COs need to move to using DICE machines by 31/5 where
possible. (noted 2002-05-28) [non-DICE COs]
Except for laptop users, done. Done
- Trusted inf hosts
generate list and populating LDAP. [Alastair/Paul] (was
Simon)
This will be generated from the inventory by providing
an additional resource. [This is just a temporary fix while we
need to provide lists of trusted inf hosts to
legacy file servers.]

cos@inf: tweaking the Harvester

Julieta is going to look into this.

- Doc HOWTOs: HOWTO
information will be extracted/distilled from list by the 'doc'
team and put into flat files on the 'doc' pages.
This is complete but COs need to remember to put 'HOWTO' in
the subject line of relevant messages so they get auto-collated.

- Schedule
- Mail
-
External access will be arranged when George is back to do
firewall changes.
A Certificate Authority for Informatics would be useful [ACTION: Neil]
- Teaching usage:
-
A list will be available later today showing status of all
software,
although other sites than KB will need to fill in the gaps.
The schedule was revised as follows:
- Standalone minimal laptop, now due 2/8 (was 28/6)
- Homepages server, now due 2/8 (was 26/7)
- Printing, now due 2/8 (was 12/7)
- Mail server available for public use, now due 9/8 (was 26/7)
The revised timetable is here.
- Misc
- amd:
- Tim has investigated the bug further.
It appears to occur when NFS servers disappear for a duration around 1
minute (ie, longer than a short time but shorter than a long time).
To be looked at further when George gets back.
- logserver:
- The logserver needs to be turned off for certain components to
preserve security. The component will be given additional resources
to do this.
[ACTION: Paul]
- RH 7.3 upgrade:
- there are too many things to do
to include thie in the default desktop rollout for October. There
will be a development stream and inevitably there will some cases
where it is needed. Some rollout of it may occur at Xmas 2002.
