DICE Meeting 2002-08-20

Ground Floor Seminar Room, BP, 1100-1300

Agenda

  1. Machine name changes
  2. Review of 'Mail Plan'
  3. Rollout Plan update
  4. Actions Arising from minutes of meeting of 2002-08-06
Apologies: Andrew, Carol, Jeremy, Johann, Paul

Decisions

  1. Changing the hostname of machine: If a machine in the inf domain has its hostname changed then it is a requirement that the machine undergoes a complete re-installation. This is to guarantee that any kerberos client key belonging to the previous use of the machine is destroyed.
  2. New users: It was agreed that after 2002-09-18 any new users would only be given accounts in the DICE world and none (that they could use) in the legacy domains. It was acceptable however to have skeleton entries in the legacy passwd maps to ease administration of their file space.

Minutes

  1. Changing the hostname of machine

It was decided that if a machine in the inf domain has its hostname changed then it is a requirement that the machine undergoes a complete re-installation. This is to guarantee that any kerberos client key belonging to the previous use of the machine is destroyed.

  2. Mail Plan

The current draft of the mail plan had been circulated to computing staff shortly before the meeting.

There was some discussion as to the likely consequences of changing the DICE client sendmail.cf configuration file so that the relay and local email are directed at mail.inf.ed.ac.uk instead of postbox.dcs.ed.ac.uk and that the client masquerades as inf.ed.ac.uk instead of dcs.ed.ac.uk. It was agreed that this change should be made as soon as possible but some concerns were expressed about whether the mail hub would handle root mail and mail for new users correctly. The mail team will update the client sendmail.cf to copy root mail to the rootmail list and to the mail.root value (or equivalent).

    [ACTION: Mail Team]

The following additional actions were agreed:

In order to help other users convert from using legacy mail servers to the mail.inf mail hub with as little difficulty as possible the following plain text documents would be drafted, circulated to cos@inf, before being converted to html and published by the documentation team:

The date on which all inf->legacy redirects would be removed and replaced by legacy->inf redirects was discussed. The date proposed by the mail plan was 2002-09-18 but concern was expressed that this was possibly inconveniently late for directors of studies etc. It was agreed near the end of the discussion of the mail plan that we would aim for a changeover date of 2002-09-10 but that we would review this decision on Tuesday 2002-08-27. Ken will inform Morna of this decision.

    [ACTION: Ken]

  3. Matters arising from minutes of last meeting (2002-08-06)

    1. Actions Arising - DICE deployment publicity: Site managers should make sure that this publicity is provided. [Alastair/Jeremy/Ken]
      Ongoing
    2. Actions Arising - MIS feed: check about getting data direct.[Neil]
Waiting for the feed to be setup in due course.
      Ongoing

Neil noted that the uid server will disappear at some point once the automation server is up and running.
There was also a concern over whether it will issue 64-bit UIDs and whether there are kernel issues under 7.1 and in particular whether applications will handle them. This needs to be checked.
      [ACTION: Alastair]
    3. Trusted inf hosts generate list and populating LDAP. [Alastair/Paul]

This will be generated from the inventory by providing an additional resource. [This is just a temporary fix while we need to provide lists of trusted inf hosts to legacy file servers.]

      Done

    4. searchable cos@inf: tweaking the Harvester config. [Julieta] (noted 2002-06-11)
      Ongoing
    5. Actions Arising - MSc/PhD group: check what may be needed. [Ken].

Jon Oberlander and Gill Hayes have been contacted about this; awaiting a response.

      Ongoing

    6. Associates: advertise policy. (noted 2002-06-25) [Jeremy]
      Done
    7. Mail redirecting from legacy: publicise plan (noted 2002-07-10) [Jeremy]

A draft version will be circulated to mail team. Situation has changed since original plan as we have put in system-level redirects from inf back to legacy to avoid dual mailboxes existing.

      Ongoing
sendmail.cf needs to be updated to change from mailing to dcs. and also to include the 's' prefix for student redirects.
      Done
fetchmail with SSL support is being looked at for dai/cogsci. Tim was asked to do this for dai.
      [ACTION: Tim, Jeremy]
    8. Milestones: review with Alastair/George (noted 2002-07-09) [Jeremy]
      Done
    9. Rollout plan: need more detailed one (noted 2002-07-09)
      Ongoing
CEG decided recently that it would be good to convert a couple of student labs to increase the load on the various servers/services. This is happening for KB/SB. (At BP the MScs are using the only lab facilities so these won't get converted until after the MSc finishes.)

It was agreed that after 2002-09-18 any new users would only be given accounts in the DICE world and none (that they could use) in the legacy domains. It was acceptable however to have skeleton entries in the legacy passwd maps to ease administration of their file space.

    10. Pilot service progress: turn off the KDE screen blanking for the public-access pilot (noted 2002-07-23) [Iain]

On investigation this turned out to involve more work than was warranted. We will leave things as they are.

      Dropped
The JAVA installation has been finished by Carwyn and is ready to go out.
      [ACTION: Carwyn]

There are a couple of environment fixes required (background KDE screen and Java paths).

      [ACTION: Craig]
    11. eduni.inf : find out what newsgroups are required for teaching purposes. (noted 2002-07-09) [Ken]

Gillian Hayes has been contacted; awaiting a response.

      Ongoing]
    12. logserver: add resource for controlling logging. (noted 2002-07-23) [Alastair/Paul]
      Ongoing
    13. amd

George managed to cause the same symptoms on a test machine as were afflicting rhymer users, and fixed the bug in amd that caused them. BP are now going to try switching back to rhymer's hme interface, to see if George's bug-fix sorts them out too.

      [ACTION: Bill]
    14. School: the front page of the Informatics web pages will be changed from 'Division' to 'School' but nothing else needs to be done as a priority. (noted 2002-08-06) [Neil]
      Done
    15. teaching s/w: teaching staff need another reminder about teaching s/w. The pages with all modules listed need to be publicised. (noted 2002-08-06) [Carwyn]
      Done
    16. newsletters: need to repeat some of the information already announced. (noted 2002-08-06) [Jeremy]
      Done
    17. support email address: since all users will be required to use a web form for support, there needs to an alternative to support@inf for use for external contacts (eg in DNS records). The Help/Support team will propose a name. (noted 2002-08-06) [Chris/John]
      Ongoing
    18. documentation: the doc page has been reorganised and a revised, DICE-oriented inf/Systems page has been created. This will become the default shortly. (noted 2002-08-06) [Alison/Chris]
      Ongoing
    19. VMware licensing issues need to be clarified. (noted 2002-08-06) [Carwyn]
      Done
    20. hardware speed: although DICE will be run on some older machines there aren't any real concerns about older slower desktop hardware. However, there will almost certainly be problems with the older officially supported laptops. Need to announce that machines older than 3-4 years will probably not be supported. Draft announcement required. (noted 2002-08-06) [Jeremy]
      Done
