cos@inf : setup Harvester/glimpse
(noted 2002-06-11) cos@inf to describe how to get the EUCS
Certificate Authority. (noted 2002-08-20) It was decided that if a machine in the inf domain has its hostname changed then it is a requirement that the machine undergoes a complete re-installation. This is to guarantee that any kerberos client key belonging to the previous use of the machine is destroyed.
The current draft of the mail plan had been circulated to computing staff shortly before the meeting.
There was some discussion as to the likely consequences of changing the DICE client sendmail.cf configuration file so that the relay and local email are directed at mail.inf.ed.ac.uk instead of postbox.dcs.ed.ac.uk and that the client masquerades as inf.ed.ac.uk instead of dcs.ed.ac.uk. It was agreed that this change should be made as soon as possible but some concerns were expressed about whether the mail hub would handle root mail and mail for new users correctly. The mail team will update the client sendmail.cf to copy root mail to the rootmail list and to the mail.root value (or equivalent).
The following additional actions were agreed:
cos@inf to describe how to get the
EUCS Certificate Authority.
In order to help other users convert from using legacy mail servers to
the mail.inf mail hub with as little difficulty as possible the
following plain text documents would be drafted, circulated to
cos@inf, before being converted to html and published by
the documentation team:
The date on which all inf->legacy redirects would be removed and replaced by legacy->inf redirects was discussed. The date proposed by the mail plan was 2002-09-18 but concern was expressed that this was possibly inconveniently late for directors of studies etc. It was agreed near the end of the discussion of the mail plan that we would aim for a changeover date of 2002-09-10 but that we would review this decision on Tuesday 2002-08-27. Ken will inform Morna of this decision.
This will be generated from the inventory by providing an
additional resource. [This is just a temporary fix while we
need to provide lists of trusted inf hosts to
legacy file servers.]
cos@inf: tweaking the Harvester
config. [Julieta] (noted 2002-06-11) Jon Oberlander and Gill Hayes have been contacted about this; awaiting a response.
A draft version will be circulated to mail team. Situation has changed since original plan as we have put in system-level redirects from inf back to legacy to avoid dual mailboxes existing.
sendmail.cf
needs to be updated to change from mailing to dcs. and also to
include the 's' prefix for student redirects.fetchmail with SSL support is being looked at for
dai/cogsci. Tim was asked to do this for dai. It was agreed that after 2002-09-18 any new users would only be given accounts in the DICE world and none (that they could use) in the legacy domains. It was acceptable however to have skeleton entries in the legacy passwd maps to ease administration of their file space.
On investigation this turned out to involve more work than was warranted. We will leave things as they are.
There are a couple of environment fixes required (background KDE screen and Java paths).
eduni.inf
: find out what newsgroups are required for teaching
purposes. (noted 2002-07-09) [Ken]
Gillian Hayes has been contacted; awaiting a response.
amd George managed to cause the same symptoms on a test machine as were afflicting rhymer users, and fixed the bug in amd that caused them. BP are now going to try switching back to rhymer's hme interface, to see if George's bug-fix sorts them out too.
support@inf for use
for external contacts (eg in DNS records). The Help/Support team
will propose a name. (noted 2002-08-06) [Chris/John]
