cos@inf : setup Harvester/glimpse
(noted 2002-06-11) amdThere is a possibility
that fishsupper.inf is still suffering from amd
problems. Bill will enable full debugging on amd on
fishsupper.inf. (noted 2002-09-03)
cos@inf: tweaking the Harvester
config. [Julieta] (noted 2002-06-11)
Jon Oberlander and Gill Hayes have been contacted about this; awaiting a response.
A draft version will be circulated to mail team. Situation has changed since original plan as we have put in system-level redirects from inf back to legacy to avoid dual mailboxes existing.
The mail issues were discussed under a separate agenda item.
eduni.inf
: find out what newsgroups are required for teaching
purposes. (noted 2002-07-09) [Ken]
Gillian Hayes has been contacted; awaiting a response.
fetchmail:
with SSL support is being looked at for
dai/cogsci. Tim was asked to do this for dai. There are a couple of environment fixes required (background KDE screen and Java paths). [Craig]
DICE specific elements of the environment need to be factored out.
support@inf for use
for external contacts (eg in DNS records). The Help/Support team
will propose a name. (noted 2002-08-06) [Chris/John] cos@inf to describe
how to get the EUCS Certificate Authority. (noted 2002-08-20)
[Simon] amd:
George managed to cause the same symptoms on a test machine
as were afflicting rhymer users, and fixed the bug in
amd that caused them. BP are now going to try
switching back to rhymer's hme interface, to see if George's
bug-fix sorts them out too. [Bill]
There is a possibility that fishsupper.inf is still suffering from these problems. Bill will enable full debugging on amd on fishsupper.inf. (noted 2002-09-03)
Chris had proposed that an internal mailing list for support staff be set up. There was some concern that it was possibly dangerous to discuss support issues entirely separately from other CO staff and that many of the topics that would be candidates for discussion in the next few months would be resolved fairly quickly. We will revisit this proposal in three months. Chris will raise the issue in December/January (noted 2002-09-03)
Ken raised a couple of points about access control for staff-restricted web pages on www.informatics.
The following mail issues were discussed:
There was some discussion as to whether we should change our decision about not allowing POP access to mail.inf. Although no POP access is advertised for staffmail there is in fact POP access from within the ed domain. It was agreed that this was not a good enough reason for changing our previous decision.
Neil will poll for comments on the dropping of insecure imap connections to mail.inf from outwith the ed.ac.uk domain. (noted 2002-09-03)
Many spoke about the advantages of allowing use of spamassassin on mail.inf or even of sending all mail through spamassassin on mail.inf. Alastair argued that we could not take this decision without consulting Jeremy and Paul. Alastair will consult them as soon as they are back. (noted 2002-09-03)
Ken will provide on Wednesday 4th September an alias list for the postmaster of each legacy domain mapping local username of staff member to be redirected to their inf mail address. (noted 2002-09-03)
Each postmaster should mail the above-listed staff members prior to redirecting the mail from the legacy mail server to mail.inf and again when the redirects are in place to confirm the change (even though this will mean multiple messages for those with more than one legacy account). (noted 2002-09-03)
Ken will mail those people on the staff@inf mail alias who will not be redirected on September 10th to let them know what is (not) happening. (noted 2002-09-03)
Chris and Morna will poll the draft authors of the mail document in order to add information to it on the facts that staff will need to know in order for them to decide individually how they wish to store their mail folders. (noted 2002-09-03)
Bill said that people unfamiliar with the lcfg/dcs/DICE way of doing things needed help over the hurdles they will encounter when moving between legacy and DICE systems. Some of these people are keen to move to DICE, but need more information and help to do it.
Documentation to addresses these questions/criticisms will have to take a lower priority than key implementation tasks which still need to be completed so those responsible for an area that needs better documentation may well not be in a position to do anything personally about producing this documentation. Alastair suggested that those who are finished with the bulk of their DICE work could themselves produce the user documentation that they feel is missing.
Support staff (and others) should pass on any questions/criticisms about the introduction of DICE to the documentation team. (noted 2002-09-03)
Alison will direct the documentation team in summarising the reasons for the choices made in DICE and the advantages of those choices by trawling through the various task reports in order to produce a brief document describing the benefits of moving to DICE. (noted 2002-09-03)
Mail on mail.inf will be backed up for longer than 30 days until there is time to discuss this at Computing Committee. (noted 2002-09-03)
There was no time for discussion of this agenda item
