DICE News 2002-04 #2 General: 1) University-wide Unique User Names (staff only) General: 2) Mail and web identity (everyone) Please make sure you read the items in the 'General' category and then in any other categories as seems appropriate. For safety, that means read everything :-) (A copy of this posting will be available under http://www.dice.informatics.ed.ac.uk/deploy/#deploy_news) Items are usually also covered in the DICE FAQ at http://www.dice.informatics.ed.ac.uk/faq Jeremy Olsen ================================================================ General ------- 1) University-wide Unique User Names (applies to staff only) All users within the University have been allocated a university-wide unique user name and we will be using these under the new Informatics domain. All existing usernames were checked for clashes in Spring 2000 and you should already have been told if your existing username did clash with any others. If it did you will have been assigned an alternative and should have been informed what it is. If you haven't then you will be getting your existing username under DICE. If you have joined the University in the last year you should already have the correct username and shouldn't need to change. However, there are some exceptions beeing uncovered and thse users will be notified in due course. If you are one of the few who have been assigned a new unique user name you may opt to convert to using it now. The choice is entirely up to you. This will mean that your email and web identity will change although the old ones will continue to work. If you wish to do this please contact your local support team. In future if you wish to make use of a centralised service (through EUCS, MIS, etc), you will get the same username as you have for Informatics. If you need an account in a different department in the University, you should in theory get the same username but it will ultimately depend on whether that department is observing the scheme. 2) Mail and web identity (everyone) There will be an Informatics mail server and incoming mail will be accepted to 'user@inf' as well as 'user@informatics' (where user is your unique user name). Outgoing mail will be stamped 'user@inf' although users can of course tailor their outgoing identity. There will be separate web servers for official and personal information, for reasons of security and system load. Official web space will continue to be located under 'www.informatics.ed.ac.uk' (also accessible as 'www.inf.ed.ac.uk'). Institute pages will remain the same as well. Personal pages will be located under 'homepages.inf.ed.ac.uk', in line with the approach that EUCS are adopting.
