1) DICE timetable
Stage 1 of DICE is happening for users this summer. Before giving
details of the timetable of events, it is worth clarifying a couple
of points first.
There are two main aspects to DICE: getting an account and getting
a machine.
Getting a DICE account
----------------------
From early summer there will be an new account/login for *every*
Informatics user in the DICE domain, 'inf'. There will be
nominated login servers that everyone will be to access over the
network from their legacy domain (eg, just as you can login into a
DAI machine from a CogSci one at the moment).
Getting a DICE machine
----------------------
KB: nearly all users are using PCs. These will all be reinstalled
as machines in the 'inf' domain. KB will therefore be almost
completely converted to DICE. (Approximately 1/3rd will also
be replaced, in line with current write-down policy.)
BP/FH/SB: most users have Suns. Approximately 1/3rd of these will
be replaced with PC hardware and installed as DICE machines.
However, for those who don't get new machines there will still
be access to DICE login servers from legacy.
Those users who already have PCs that are supported under DICE
(typically Dell desktops and HP laptops) will be able to have
their machines reinstalled in the DICE domain.
NB: Admin staff machines are not affected by these changes.
The current plan for the groups who will convert is
FH/SB: 1st UG, 2nd UG and MSc students, plus some staff
BP: MSc students and some PhDs/staff
The core events are as follows:
by end of May:
- all existing users get a Common Home Directory.
early June:
- 'pilot' login servers will be available for early-adopters to
start testing the DICE environment and looking into porting
software.
late June:
- all users have a full 'inf' login
- general purpose login servers will be available offering core
DICE service.
June-August:
- existing KB Linux machines reinstalled as DICE (earlier rather
than later). Some machines replaced.
- DICE machines provided at BP/FH/SB according to the local
schedule for machine replacement. This will depend on use of
student labs, etc.
July onwards
- any new members of the division will only get accounts created
in the inf domain. This obviously applies for all new
students.
The timetable for further DICE rollout, from October onwards will be
publicised later.
