General
=======
1) Informatics mail service
A mail server has been installed for the Informatics domain. As
reported previously (DICE News 2002-06 #1), we will be getting all
Informatics staff users who use cogsci, dai or dcs mail addresses
to use it for their incoming and outgoing mail (unless they have
opted to use staffmail instead).
Over the next few weeks we will be providing instructions on how
this will be done.
Key things to note:
- the Informatics mail server is accessible from all legacy
machines (UNIX, Mac or PC). You will not have to use a DICE
machine to access it
- you will have a new email address of user@inf.
- your old email address (eg freda@cogsci) will still work and any
mail sent to it will be forwarded to your @inf account.
- we expect to move all existing Informatics staff to this service
*before* the end of September.
- access to email is crucial for most people. The transition
process will take that into account.
- you may need to consider changing your mail reading program to
something more up-to-date.
- there is a web interface so you can access your email from
anywhere.
- we will *not* be migrating any current mail you have to the new
server. However, you will still have access to all your old mail.
2) Support web form
As reported previously, in order to provide more effective means
for users to report faults, requests for support will shortly
*only* be accepted when submitted via the new web form. There is
no support@inf mail address.
This will allow collating of related information such as machine
location/details and also automatic logging in a request tracking
system.
The web form is available at
http://www.informatics.ed.ac.uk/cgi-bin/support.cgi and can be
accessed from anywhere.
3) Associates policy
As reported previously people who need accounts on Informatics
machines but who are not members of Informatics will need to have a
nominated sponsor.
The policy/conditions for providing accounts are available via the
link on http://www.informatics.ed.ac.uk/admin/computing/
4) Older DCS-configured laptop support
KB-based users of laptops currently have them supported under the
old DCS configuration system. While DICE will certainly support
more recent hardware there are likely to be problems over support
of older hardware. It is quite likely therefore that hardware
older than 3-4 years will not be supported under DICE.
