Responsibilities Associated with the use of
Flexitime Working Arrangements and Working from Home

One of the attractive aspects of computing officer working arrangements is that there is considerable flexibility in when we carry out our work and where that work is done. We believe that these are very important benefits and are supportive of these flexible working arrangements.

With such arrangements also come responsibilities. The flexibility needs to be tempered to the extent that the less formal work patterns don't lead to problems of poor communication and interaction between members of staff or delays in responding to unpredictable events.

With this in mind we would like to clarify for all of us what most people have implicitly understood. It is difficult to do this without being fairly specific about the framework but we should emphasise that although numbers of hours are mentioned we are most concerned about what is achieved during those hours.

So here are some ground rules for flexible working arrangements:

Any period of home working must be agreed with the line manager and CEG.

A number of core hours (normally 5 for full time staff, pro-rata for part-time staff), to be worked between 09:00 and 17:00, will be agreed between each member of staff, the line manager and CEG. The agreed core hours for each member of staff will be published. During these agreed core hours it must be possible to actively communicate with the member of staff (by email or phone), irrespective of whether they are working in the University or at home, unless particular circumstances make this impractical (for example when travelling to or attending a meeting with other members of staff).
