Framework for the Development of Red Circled Staff -------------------------------------------------- Overall Goal ------------ To provide support and opportunity for training and guidance to enable the red circled staff to develop their skills and knowledge (especially technical) with a view to demonstrating whether they are capable of fulfilling the requirements for a graded post at a level equivalent to their protected salary. Strategy -------- Hours below are for full time members of staff (part-time staff pro-rata). Appraisals annually with line manager Four-monthly progress meeting with line manager Up to 30% of time (minimum 20%) to be guided personal development Identify (up to 200 hrs/year, equivalent to 20 credits worth of courses/year) training/courses that might be relevant (includes Informatics courses) Series of development projects (tracked via the Development Meeting) undertaken fortnightly meeting devoted to project issues with line manager. Time split ---------- Average over the working year in 35 hr week: (20-30%) 7-10.5 hrs personal development including up to 4.5 hrs training/courses 0.2 hrs progress meeting/appraisal (30%) 10.5 hrs project work including 0.5 hrs development project meeting with line manager (40-50%) 14-17.5 hrs other (unit work, unit meeting, Development Meetings) Some goals of the initial appraisal ----------------------------------- Identify technical strengths and weaknesses as perceived by the appraisee (and the appraiser) Identify which strengths can be harnessed to the benefit of the School Identify which areas might be improved through training/academic courses to the benefit of the School. Agree on an initial development project, if not already decided.
